01 - Why I'm Writing This Newsletter (And Why It Feels Terrifying)

Dear Reader,

I'm sitting here, fingers hovering over the keyboard, feeling exactly like I did when I first arrived in New York City with two suitcases and a dream. The blank page in front of me is my new unknown territory.

Just like that moment when I won the green card lottery and decided to leave everything behind, I'm taking another leap of faith. This newsletter is my new adventure – and yes, it's just as scary as boarding that plane to New York 27 years ago.

Why Now? Why Me?

Some of you might be wondering: Why start a newsletter? Why share my story?

The truth is, I've spent many years of my life playing it safe. I studied economics when my heart wanted creativity. I followed paths others expected me to follow. But that young woman who arrived in New York with broken English and big dreams? She was braver than I've been in years.

This newsletter is my way of honoring her courage – the courage that eventually led me to follow my heart, enroll in design college, and graduate with high grades and a place on the Dean's list. The courage that helped me transform from a junior designer to a creative director, despite the challenges of being a first-generation immigrant woman in a competitive field. The same courage that ultimately helped me leave behind full-time employment and dive into solopreneurship 6 years ago.

Sometimes I look back at that journey and hardly recognize myself. The path wasn't straight or easy. I had to work twice as hard at every step, but that determination – born from survival – became my greatest strength.

What to Expect

Just like my immigrant journey from Yugoslavia to New York, this newsletter will be:

• Full of lessons learned

• A bit messy (because life is)
